Glossary
Arts District = An area bounded by Hoover Ave (N), Colorado Ave (S), Las Vegas Blvd (E) and Commerce Center St (W) where several art galleries are located. It is the main destination of the First Friday event. Beltway = A 53-mile freeway forming a two-thirds loop around the Las Vegas valley. Cage = Area where the casino keeps its money. Comp = freebie (free rooms, meals, drinks, shows, airfare, etc.) casinos give gamblers. DI = Desert Inn Rd. Dude Ranch = Small resort where prospective divorcees could spend the six-month residency requirement to get a divorce (see Floyd Lamb Park).. Eye in the Sky = Casino cameras. Glitter Gulch = Downtown area around Fremont St where casinos attracted attention with many neon and electric signs. High Roller = Person who gambles more than ten thousand dollars in a couple of days. IP = Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino. Naked City = The immediate area behind the Stratosphere where the Strip dancers used to sunbathe naked during the 60s. Pit = Casino employee area behind the table games. RJ = The Las Vegas Review Journal, the daily newspaper. Six-week cure = Divorce (after the Nevada law requiring only six weeks residency to get a divorce). Spaghetti Bowl = The downtown area where highways 15 and 93/95 meet. State Line = Primm TI = Treasure Island Hotel & Casino. Toke = gratuity, tip. Whale = Person who gambles very large amounts of money (much more than a high roller) |
