Taxis
There
are 16 taxicab companies in Las Vegas (and Clark County). All companies
charge the same rate. A $1.20 airport tax charge applies additionally when
a passenger hires a taxi at the McCarran airport.
About 1,700 taxis are on the roads of Las Vegas at any time, day or night.
All major hotels and shopping malls have taxi stands; it's the easiest
way to get a taxi. You can also call a cab company and ask for a taxi.
You can also "flag" a taxi on the street, but taxis may not
stop for various reasons, such as:
- They are
not allowed to pick up or drop off people in traffic (roads where cars
are or may be coming). If you stand next to a
driveway (and give the driver time to notice you), the taxi may stop.
- Some
taxis are "geographically restricted," that is, they are not
allowed to pick up customers on the Strip, downtown, or at McCarran
airport (so that other areas of the city are also covered).
- Some
cab companies are restricted to certain areas. For example, A-Cab taxis
can take passengers only on the west side of Interstate 15 (parallel
to the Strip); Deluxe Cab taxis can take passenger only south of Sunset
(about a mile and a half south of the Strip).
- Some taxis
are finishing their shifts and are on the way to the garage.
- A
cab driver may also refuse to take a customer if he or she does not
provide a destination or does not have the ability to pay the fare.
Taxis
in Las Vegas do not accept credit cards, with the exception of De Luxe Cab Co.
